It is sharp right out of the box. I have used it for a short period of time and cannot comment on the sharpening and edge retention.

This is a very beautiful knife set. It's a true pattern-welded steel knife (also called "damascus"). The blade comprises of alternating 110 layers of 10Cr15CoMoV and one other steel (which I believe is 9Cr15MoV). 10Cr15CoMoV is the Chinese version of the well-regarded Japanese VG10. 9Cr15MoV is the Chinese version of the Japanese ZDF-905 steel. It's unclear how exactly the knife maker stacked, folded, and refolded the steel billet repeatedly to come up with 110 layers, but rest assured, there are many layers. The knife can be sharpened to a high level of sharpness and maintains that level of sharpness very well. Since the blade is very thin, the knife is a slicer, not a chopper. I wouldn't use the knife to chop anything heavy because I don't think either the half-tang handle or the thin blade can take the stress from chopping.
